Enhancing Core Teaching Skills with Technology

A Little About Me

Hi! My name is Patlynn Goodenough. These are pictures from my wedding , August 3, 2010. Pictured on the left are my mother, myself and Ed, and my sister. On the right are my daughter-in-law Julie, my son Tom, myself and Ed, and my daughter, Katy. I graduated from West Virginia University in 1975 with a B.S. degree in Elementary Education with specializations in Early Childhood and Language Arts. My first teaching position was at Northern Potter. I taught fourth, fifth, and sixth grades in a multi-leveled Reading and Math curriculum for five years. I then spent the next 14 years raising my children and substituting. I returned to full time work in 1994 at Austin Area School where I still am today. My present position is teaching Middle School Language Arts. I live in Austin with my husband Ed and his German Shepard, Kirsa, and my cat, Talisman. I love to read, shop, and visit with family. Together, Ed and I love to camp, walk, go motorcycling, cook, and watch movies.Introduction to my ePortfolio In this wiki I am displaying what I have learned in the Enhancing Core Teaching Skills with Technology Course. I have become aware of the endless possibilities in education through utilizing technology and hope to impart these skills to my students thus enabling them to gain 21st Century Skills they will very much need across their lifetime.

My goal(s)

I want to find a balance between instruction, assessment, and the effective use of digital tools and resources in my classes, especially to extend and enhance 7th grade English Literature. After reviewing my Lotti Survey, I found that in the Level of Teaching Innovation I scored a level 2-Exploration. My goal is to bring this up to a level 3-Infusion. I will do this by placing more emphasis on higher order thinking and engaged student learning. At the level of Current Instructional Practices I scored a level 3-"Somewhat True of Me Now". In order to up this level, my goal is to change to a more learner-based approach with more diversified activities, performance-based assessments, peer reviews, and student reflections. On the level of Personal Computer Use I scored a 1-Not True of Me Now. My goal on this framework is to jump to a level 3-Somewhat Ture of Me Now. I know I need to take the time and make the effort to learn how to use digital tools. I am aware that this will make my life and my teaching easier.
Now that this class is close to being over, I feel that I have made beginning strides regarding integrating technology into my lessons for my students. I still have a lot to learn, but presently I want to create lessons that will help my students learn better ways to conduct research and present information. I want my students to use tech tools that will help them become better information searchers, organizers, and presenters. The information literacy skills I want to focus on are: accessing information effectively, evaluating the information critically and competently, and using the information accurately and creatively.
